Son of a gun right at home on range

GETTING one over your old man in a sporting contest is always a memorable moment for any teenage boy.

dufus2 GETTING one over your old man in a sporting contest is always a memorable moment for any teenage boy. But when your father is one of four former Australia representatives you beat with a perfect performance, that is a whole different story. Sixteen-year-old Mayfield rifle shooter Alex Davies defeated all-comers in the full-bore category of the West Wallsend Rifle Club’s annual open prizemoney meeting last month with a score of 150 out of 150 at Cessnock. Aiming at targets over two ranges of 500 yards (457.2 metres) and one of 600 yards (548.6m), Davies scored the maximum of five points in each of his 30 attempts to claim his first open competition win. It was also the first perfect score in a three-range contest for the year11 student from St Philip’s Christian College in Waratah. Making the feat even more worthy, Davies defeated a high-class field in windy conditions. ‘‘It was a great thrill, especially with the level of competition there,’’ Davies said. ‘‘There were four former Australian team members and 12 current or former state team members.’’ The ex-national team shooters included Rick Ashton and Michael Millen, but Davies said the biggest thrill came from beating his dad, Duncan. Davies snr, who owns 10 of the West Wallsend club’s 16 records and has been in multiple national and state teams, said his son’s performance in difficult conditions was ‘‘a real feather in his cap’’. The win came in just the third year of competitive shooting for Davies, who helped the five-member NSW under-25 side complete a clean sweep of the national titles in March in Bendigo. He also won the under-18 champion of champions state title in 2013 and was second this year. Davies said the open competition win was ‘‘very encouraging’’ as he set his sights on one day reaching the top of the full bore division, which is part of the Commonwealth Games. ‘‘I really want to get into the national team at some stage in my life and go represent Australia overseas or go to the Commonwealth Games,’’ he said. In the short-term, Davies is aiming to match NSW teammate Mitch Bailey, who beat him in the under-18 titles this year, at the three-day state Queen’s tournament next month in Sydney. ‘‘The top30 people at the Queen’s event get a badge and that’s what I’m aiming for now,’’ he said. ‘‘One of my friends in the state team has got one and he’s slightly younger than I am, so I’m trying to catch up with him.’’ Davies’s rise to prominence has come through countless Saturdays training and competing at the Cessnock Rifle Club, which is the last long-distance range in the Hunter and the home of the West Wallsend club since 1998. He also fine-tunes his skills  at the Newcastle Small Bore and Air Rifle Club at Waratah but said he prefers long-range shooting because ‘‘it’s a bit more of a challenge’’.
